Boiler Replacement #1

In the Trauma Center at Mercy San Juan, three high-pressure steam boilers serve the surgical needs of the OR Suite. Due to an existing, faulty boiler reaching its end-of-service lifespan, a new replacement boiler was needed.

The project team collaborated well from the onset, effectively planning the minimization of impact on the surgery schedule. Disconnecting the old boiler and introducing the new boiler required the steam service to be shut down over a weekend to allow for the work to take place. Also being replaced was the feedwater system supplying the boilers.

Boiler Replacement #2

During the lead-up to the cutover work for the new boiler, it was deemed that a second boiler also needed replacing. The initial cutover efforts to replace boiler #1 stayed on course. However, replacing the 2nd boiler simultaneously wasn’t feasible due to the lead time necessary to acquire it. Additional plumbing connections were installed during cutover #1 to allow the steam shutdown associated with the second boiler to be as minor as possible.

Both boilers are now installed and operational.  With the full commitment of everyone on the team, the project was completed in an efficient, organized manner overcoming the unforeseen issue of needing a second boiler to be added to the project. Additionally, the impact on the facility was kept low through an effectively communicating team that included various departments.
